The next two pictures were shot without and with the flash on a Canon SD1000 point and shoot. The flash brings out some attributes of the fishes color on the lower half of his body and more color overall. The daylight artificial lights were also on for the shot. The background needs to be controlled better as the flash helped to illuminate it. Also there is a slight ghost shadow around the fish on the left which would be more pronounced with a lighter background.

Background choices for the subject should not compete, but compliment the subject. The background choices here have profound affect on the subject. With the white background the highlights of the subject seem to be more pronounced, Exposure meter readings on the two scenes might be different as the meter may have been influenced by the background light. With lighter backgrounds shadow control is more difficult.
