How to shoot Fireworks with your Digital Camera

1. Get to the site early and check out the foreground for trees and phone poles and such. These often can be distracting but sometimes can give a sense of scale to the display as well.

2. Use a tripod.

3. Settings: I would recommend manual focus although I have seldom had a problem with the auto focus. Occasionally one comes out blurred. Zoom in on the area where the fireworks are being set off and set your focus. You can now zoom in and out all night with good focus. Next shoot at high f-stops. I generally use an aperture priority mode and set the f-stop to f11. This gives me nice long exposures of 1 to 2 seconds. (The shot at the left actually was a short exposure)

4. Through out the event try different ranges of zoom. Sometimes fill the frame with burst and at other times include a distant shot to show the surrounding area (such as the one above). Occasionally during the night I will go to manual and try for really long exposures, but I usually stick with the aperture priority mode.

5. Once you have the camera set up, turn the LCD off and simply keep pushing your shutter release throughout. This way you can watch the event without peering through a viewfinder or LCD screen. After all, you are there to enjoy the show too! Turning the LCD off will also allow the camera to react faster when you push the shutter button. There will not be as much lag time and you won’t have to anticipate the shots as much.

6. Resolution? What will you do with the images? I generally shoot at highest resolution for my camera. The draw back to this is that it takes longer for the camera to process the images and reset. Will you miss anything? Probably not since you can shoot a 100 frames easily in a 40 minute show.

7. Burst mode could be an interesting solution for finalies. The problem is that generally the resolution will be lowered.

8. Experiment. Have fun and try different settings.

Happy Fireworks Shooting!
