October 1st, 2006. Jeanette and I explored these two trails for the first time. Both trails are mostly paved and therefore an easy ride. To see more information on these two trails click here. Both trails are part of the Allegheny Valley Trails Association. We planned to put on the Sandy Creek Trail near Van, PA. U.S. Route 322 comes very close to the trail here. I unloaded the bikes and looked at Jeanette’s tire and noticed that the whole side wall was blown out (make note that when tires get very old they deteriorate!) We made a quick trip to the Cranberry Walmart and I bought two new cruising style tires for Jette’s bike. We changed plans to put on to the trail nearby at Rockland. I fixed the tires and after only a short delay we were finally on our way! The Sandy Creek trail runs for nine miles along the pristine Sandy Creek which today was flowing wild and muddy. This trail crosses numerous bridges and one tunnel. The Sandy Creek trail crosses the Allegheny River at Bellmar on a long bridge. On the eastern shore at the beginning to the bridge there is a stairway down to the Allegheny River Trail. We rode north on this trail almost to Franklin, PA. Enjoy the pictures below and see some of the sights that we viewed this fine October day.
